Summer Research and Internships

Summer Internships:

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences

Application Procedure: via NIEHS website link below

The Summer Internship Program at NIEHS is part of the National Institutes of Health Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (NIH SIP). NIEHS is located in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Scientists at NIEHS are committed to sharing with students and educators the intensity, excitement, sense of discipline, and tremendous satisfaction that careers in science can impart to those who pursue them.

The Summer Internship Program provides opportunities for outstanding high school, undergraduate, and graduate students interested in pursuing careers in the biomedical/biological sciences to work on a research project that entails exposure to the latest biochemical, molecular, and analytical techniques in a given field.

NIST SURF Program:

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is designed to inspire undergraduate students to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) through a unique research experience that supports the NIST mission.  Over the course of 11 weeks, SURF students contribute to the ongoing research of one of the six NIST facilities which are the Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL), Engineering Laboratory (EL), Information Technology Laboratory (ITL), Material Measurement Laboratory (MML), NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR), and Physical Measurement Laboratory (PML) (which now includes project in the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology).  The SURF Program is administered at Gaithersburg, MD with a few are located in Boulder, Colorado.

Applications are required to be submitted through USAJOBS.  Only U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents are eligible to participate in the SURF Program.

For more information please visit the NIST SURF website: https://www.nist.gov/surf.

NASA Internships and Fellowships:

NASA Internships are competitive awards to support educational opportunities that provide unique NASA-related research and operational experiences for high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, as well as educators. These opportunities serve students by integrating interns with career professionals emphasizing mentor-directed, degree-related tasks, while contributing to the operation of a NASA facility or the advancement of NASA’s missions.

For more information and application please visit their website at https://intern.nasa.gov/.

Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET):

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) at Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology (IMET) provides training opportunities to a diverse body of undergraduates with a long term goal of providing a strong pipeline of students continuing to higher degrees in these fields.  Each summer, the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology at the Inner Harbor offers students the opportunity to conduct a nine-week project research in marine sciences applying molecular tools. The summer internship will provide orientation to working in a lab, seminars on the use of molecular techniques relevant to fisheries, energy production, and environmental research, introductions to bioanalytics and DNA-sequencing, a research project with an IMET faculty mentor, and a one-day workshop on communicating science.
